Offshore Oil Platforms
Background and Challenges
During operation, offshore oil platforms face the following major challenges:
  • High Requirements for Power Supply Reliability
Offshore platforms usually operate in an islanded mode, requiring highly reliable power systems to ensure continuous operation of critical equipment.
  • Frequent Load Fluctuations
Operations such as drilling and oil production involve significant load variations, requiring power systems with fast dynamic response capability.
  • Severe Impact During Submarine Cable Energization
Long-distance power transmission through submarine cables is prone to magnetizing inrush currents and overvoltages, which must be effectively suppressed to prevent equipment damage.
Overview

Leveraging over 80% market share in synchronization systems and industry-leading technology in fast transfer devices, GoLead Intelligent delivers an integrated power system solution featuring multi-source grid synchronization, seamless power transfer, and intelligent protection.

The solution is applicable to drilling platforms, production platforms, and Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs), enabling zero-flicker power supply, low electrical stress, and long-term reliable operation of offshore power systems.

Key Technologies
  • High-Precision Automatic Synchronization and Grid-Connection Control
The system provides high-precision synchronization control with a phase angle difference of ≤ 0.5°, supporting fast connection and disconnection of up to 16 generator units, fully meeting the multi-source synchronization requirements of offshore platforms. In line with national localization strategies, GoLead Intelligent has independently developed reliable, fully domestically engineered synchronization devices, ensuring high performance, long-term stability, and full compliance with localization requirements.
  • Millisecond-Level Seamless Fast Transfer
By coordinating fast transfer devices with high-speed vacuum circuit breakers, the solution achieves an end-to-end power transfer time of ≤ 20 ms (detection ≤ 5 ms, opening ≤ 5 ms, closing ≤ 10 ms), which is significantly faster than the approximately 500 ms response time of conventional automatic transfer schemes. This ultra-fast, disturbance-free transfer capability ensures uninterrupted power supply to critical loads such as drilling and production equipment, maintaining overall system stability during power source switching.
  • Smart Inrush Current and Overvoltage Suppression
The solution adopts advanced phase-controlled switching technology to effectively suppress magnetizing inrush currents and overvoltages generated during submarine cable energization, protecting the insulation integrity of primary equipment. In addition, phase-selection control optimizes circuit breaker closing timing, reduces the risk of restrike arcs, safeguards sensitive platform equipment, and significantly extends overall equipment service life.
Application Results and Cases

In a large offshore oil platform application, the solution significantly enhanced overall power system performance by achieving 100% power supply continuity for critical loads, effectively eliminating equipment shutdowns caused by power source switching. Through advanced inrush current suppression and overvoltage protection, the equipment failure rate was reduced by 30%, extending equipment service life and improving long-term reliability. In addition, intelligent monitoring and diagnostic functions reduced the need for manual inspections, leading to higher operation and maintenance efficiency.
